This piece is a medley of three Christmas carols, each of which speaks of the Magi, or Wise Men, who journeyed from the east bringing gifts to the Christ child. These include "We Three Kings of Orient Are", "The Golden Carol of Melchior, Gasper and Balthazar", and "La Marche des Rois" ("March of the Kings"). All three melodies are in a minor mode and convey a certain exotic quality to these mysterious figures who have inspired so many works of art, but about whom we know so little.
